Let's Commit to Comment #commit2comment

This week I've finally have had a little more time to visit blogs.  As I have moved from post to post, I've realized how many blogs, especially new bloggers, are not receiving comments; even though the message is moving, the voice is interesting, the opening for conversation is there.  While I typically try to leave 3 comments for every round-up I join, I'll admit I haven't been commenting as much either.  During the school year, I was quite guilty of reading and then clicking away.  It seemed an issue of time, yet I know readers who leave comments across blogs all the time.

Let's #commit2comment
For the summer, to remedy this problem, I'm committing to 5 comments each day and at least one of those comments will be on a blog that is new to me.  I will comment 5 of the 7 days a week…so 5 x 5 will be 25 comments per week.  I'm hoping others will join me in committing to comment (#commit2comment) by setting their own appropriate summer commenting goals.  I'm hoping you will tweet or blog your summer commitment and set a goal that works for you.   Let's start a movement to share some blog love and keep the conversations going.

  1. I'm committing! I couldn't agree more. And, in fact, I was just thinking about how much I miss our conversations. I have checked out your posts but not commented as much. Not because I am lazy but because I don't seem to have as much time as I did before. I am always sneaking in the bathroom with my laptop or looking at posts at 11pm. These are less than ideal conditions for excellent thinking and worthy commenting. Thanks for the reminder and I miss you!

    1. Kimberley,
I agree! I miss the conversations as well. Now that I have more time, I'm looking forward to thinking with others as I move from blog to blog.

  2. Thanks for the reminder! I have been commenting less, too. I think using Feedly (or another reader) contributes because I need to take an extra step to go to the post. But I'm committing to at least 3 comments a day. Happy commenting!

  3. Love this! We have become stalkers lately. Not sure why either. We will post our commitment this week! Thanks for the reminder - great way to build the habit.

  5. I really like this idea and will commit to 5 when I am on vacation (June 28th). For now, I will commit to at least 1 a day.

  6. I so love that you have invented your own hashtag, but what a great one it is!! #commit2comment is a perfect goal for me this summer as well. You're right - I either blog and don't comment (most likely) OR blog and only comment on my "regulars." Thanks for this wake-up call. A relationship, rather in person or online, is a 2-way street. A good thought for me.
What a great digital citizenship lesson this would be for kids as well!

  7. Many years ago, I worked out that the average rate of viewer to commenter - or lurker to active was about 1:10-1:14 That seemed to hold true for forums, blogs, twitter, everything. (staff meetings?)
Now though, I think the proportions have changed significantly. I wrote a blog post called 1001 Classroom Uses For Minecraft, and it was tweeted well over a 1000 times, Facebook liked over 500, and it had...drum roll please....0 comments.
I just tweeted out a great blog post from my daughter asking for comments. Tweeted it several times, including with the comments4kids hashtag, and got nothing.
I actually tell people if you are blogging for comments, you're going to be disappointed.

  9. Scott,
You make a great point about Feedly. When I'm in a hurry I read, read, read and don't take the time to jump out of Feedly. Since it is summer I will likely spend more time on my laptop making this transition a little easier.

  11. Loralee,
I liked 5x5. I thought it gave me a few days off, but allowed me to commit to a little more commenting in the summer.

    Enjoy your last days!

  12. Debra,
It's funny. Since I committed to five, I usually find myself commenting more often. I guess it's reminded me of the importance of keeping the conversation going. Thanks for the comment, and enjoy your last days.

  13. Karen,
I loved this: "A relationship, rather in person or online, is a 2-way street." Also thanks for the reminder about our role as digital citizens. I tell my students this all of the time and need to remember to practice it myself (including response commenting).

  14. Phillip,
Your comment is exactly why I am committing to this for the summer because I have the time to do so. Perhaps I'll create a habit that will continue into the madness of a school year. I know I need to do a better job of doing my part to respond to the thinking of others. I can't tell you how many times I read a blog and think "wow" or "I wonder" and then just click out. I'm always amazed by how much is shared on blogs.

I'm always thankful for those readers, like you, who take the time to stop and share their thinking after reading. I can't fix it, but I can work to change my own reading/commenting. This seemed like a good way to get started. I'll throw my stone into the pond and hope it ripples a bit.

  15. What a great idea! Having "commentsations" are so important not only as a blogger but also as a reader. Thanks for the idea to #commit2comment! (that is just as hard to type as it is to say! :))

I'm in! I'll post about it soon. This is such a great idea. Audience motivates me when I write, so this is a must! Are you "keeping track" anywhere? I'll do the 5x5 challenge. Can't wait to begin! Thanks for the motivation! (By the way, I'm presenting on teachers blogging this week and I am going to include this challenge in my presentation! Hoping teachers will start blogs AND commenting too! Thanks!!

  17. Seriously! I love your blog and words can't describe how much you inspire me! Tonya Buelow and I were just talking about you yesterday! You keep us on our toes. Thank you. And, I'm up for the commenting challenge!
